The Truth Behind the Rumor: Will Earth Go Dark for Fifteen Days?

Darkness for 15 Days

(Photo : GettyImages/MattCardy) Experts have refuted a rumor circulating on social media that Earth will experience darkness for 15 days.

While the world is still recovering from terrorist attacks in Paris, some people are bracing themselves for impending "darkness."

The phenomenon was first reported by Newswatch33.com. The report stated that even NASA confirmed that Earth will go dark "starting November 15, 2015 at 3 a.m. and the darkness will end on November 30, 2015 at 4:15 p.m."

The news site reported that the reason behind earth going dark for 15 days was "Venus passing Jupiter", and this apparently caused a reaction that led to the production of Hydrogen. The surface of the Sun will then explode once it comes in contact with this Hydrogen gas.

Newswatch33 also reported that President Barack Obama is aware that such event is going to happen and that he was given a "1000-page report" about it.

However, Yahoo News reported that the report is hoax and that the source, Newswatch33, is a fake news site.

Let us now analyze the facts. Venus is quite far from Jupiter - 860 million kilometers far to be exact. Venus passing Jupiter is quite impossible, unless by some miracle all the planets change their places and rotation. Newswatch 33 even gave the exact time the Sun will come in contact with the hydrogen gas. How is that possible? There are too many variables to begin with - such as the atmosphere and the amount of hydrogen gas to mention a few.

The sad thing is that the report has been widely shared through social media - Twitter, Facebook et cetera. Meanwhile, there are terrorist attacks and other serious calamities in other part of the world.

According to AL.com, Newswatch 33 has a disclaimer that states that while they report current news and events, their coverage is "truthful with a shock factor and some reports are satirical."

Well, now we know that old cliché is right: Not everything that you read on the internet is true.
