Google Creates Cardboard Virtual Reality Headset for iPhones

Internet giant Google has released "Google Cardboard," for iOS devices, a cheap headset that uses smartphones to simulate a virtual reality experience.

Although virtual reality technology periodically stumbles through numerous hype cycles, the new cycle has been inspired by the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset made by Oculus VR.

Oculus VR was acquired by Facebook in March for US$2 billion.

The virtual reality company promised consumers it would use developed technology to convincingly transport them into another world. Previously, virtual reality headsets have not been adequately convincing.

They were also too expensive to catch on and made its users would experience headaches and nausea.

Though Google's version of a cheap and disposable VR headset might not be as immersive as the high-tech Oculus Rift, it might prove a virtue.

Google's headset requires the user to fold the Google Cardboard into a shape that looks like a ski goggle, download the Google Cardboard app on a smartphone and slide the phone into the slot designated for the device.

The viewer looks through the bifocal lenses provided in the cardboard template and is able to look around because the phone's accelerometer monitors the user's head movements.

Although the Google Cardboard app is only available for Android devices, there are a number of apps in Apple's App Store that produce the virtual reality experience. The compatible apps include Dive City Rollercoaster, Moorente, Stereoscopic Tunnel Effect, The Height and 3DTube.

The Google Cardboard headset template is available online on the company's site dedicated to the project. Ready-made kits are available online, ranging from US$20 to as much as US$45, according to CNET.
