(Photo : Reuters) OnePlus is running a promotion that will see the company ditch the pre-order requirement for potential buyers of the One Plus 2.

Tech company OnePlus is facing a serious backlash from customers after it was discovered that its USB Type-C cable has the potential to damage third-party devices as its draws too much power. In order to pacify customers affected with the so-called Cablegate issue, OnePlus is now offering refunds for the defective accessory.

In a statement, OnePlus said that the defective cables are "using a resistor that may not be fully compatible with some third-party devices." OnePlus says that the problem can be traced to the resistor of the cable which uses a 10-kilo ohm resistor instead of the 56-kilo ohm resistor - the standard for requirement for USB Type-C, according to My Tech Bits.

On the other hand, the problem only arises when the cables are used on third-party device. OnePlus claims that the cables work perfectly fine when used with the OnePlus 2 smartphone.

Tech experts claim that the recently released Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X are among the most vulnerable devices. Experts added that consumers need to be vigilant in purchasing peripherals for devices, especially online. Consumers are advised to double check if the peripherals they are trying to purchase are compatible with the device they want to use with it.

In this regard, OnePlus said that the refund only applies to those who purchased the cables separately with the intention of using it with other devices. OnePlus said, "If you're charging or transferring data to or from the OnePlus 2, you should have no problems using the cable that shipped with your OnePlus 2 or the cables or adapters you bought separately on OnePlus.net."

OnePlus has created a webpage where users can apply for a refund. According to The Verge, the company said that users have until Dec. 31 to apply for the refund and added that it has already created a team to develop and improve Type-C cables and adapters with 56-kilo ohm resistors.
