Google Plans to Add Blood Testing in Future Wearable Tech

Google's Patent Submission

(Photo : United States Trademark and Patents Office/ Google) Google has registered the patient for a wearable device that will be able to draw blood from a user's hand and conduct a blood test.

In the ever-evolving world of wearable technology, Google has always set the pace in several advancements.  This time, in a bid to help diabetic patients, Google wants to draw your blood using a small device paving the way to a more advanced disease tracking and diagnosis.

The company has filed a patent for a system to draw blood from a person via a hand-held or wearable device such as a smartwatch.  The "needle-free blood draw" system is designed to take blood from a person's fingertip or from a different part of the by "body sending a surge of gas into a barrel containing a micro-particle that pierces the skin."

The patent, which is still pending, may give way for a device to constantly check sugar levels for the diabetics. Google explains, "Such an application might be used to draw a small amount of blood, for example, for a glucose test."

Google already has two devices in development which are designed to help people with diabetes monitor their glucose levels: A small sensor and smart contact lenses that are connected online are meant to help patients monitor their glucose levels. The system has non-invasive sensors, microchips and other electronics embedded in the lens. Google also sent a patent for a lens with a built-in camera recently, which may be used for other applications.

The important thing to remember is that with every invention in the patent stage, it is not a guarantee that it is or will be in development in the near future. Google has not confirmed if such device is already in the planning or developmental stage. It is indicative, however, of the direction the company is heading. The World Health Organization estimates that 9% of adults have diabetes. This is a huge market that Google can tap into in the future.
