Dropbox Shuts Down Email App Mailbox and Photo Organizer App Carousel

Dropbox removes its two services -- Mailbox and Carousel

(Photo : YouTube Screenshot) Giant cloud storage app service Dropbox announced they will be shutting down two of its services, namely, email app Mailbox and photo and video management app Carousel, to allow them to focus and "create even better experiences."

Dropbox, the biggest cloud storage app on the Internet, has announced that it will be closing two features under its profile. Famous email app Mailbox and photo organizer Carousel are two of the alleged apps that will be taken down next year on February 26 and March 31, respectively.

The initiative follows Dropbox's decision to focus more on its cloud storage service. Email app Mailbox was allegedly acquired in 2013 for $100 million. Although the exact number of users has not been disclosed, the company once revealed that around 800,000 users signed up for the waiting list.

"Over the past few months, we've increased our team's focus on collaboration and simplifying the way people work together. In light of that, we've made the difficult decision to shut down Carousel and Mailbox," the company wrote on its blog

On the other hand, the multimedia-organizing app Carousel, which was launched in 2014 and functions just like Google Photos and Yahoo's Flickr, will also be shut down. Dropbox will transfer photos right into Dropbox's very own photo booth.

It appears that Dropbox is struggling to maintain its market value. Livemint reports that the storage app has currently put up an estimated $1.1 billion fund, but this is not yet close enough to its approximated $10 billion net worth.

The company will focus its venture on a service called Paper in an attempt to compete with its rival Box that was recently launched this year. "We'll also be using what we've learned from Mailbox to build new ways to communicate and collaborate on Dropbox (you can see early signs of this focus with Dropbox Paper)."

Currently, Dropbox has about 400 million users, but the company believes that with the innovation and changes, more users will be attracted. "We think this increased focus will help us create even better experiences for you in the months and years to come," the company concluded.
