In a statement acquired by GameSpot, Star Citizen creator Chris Roberts said, "Alpha 2.0 is a major breakthrough for Star Citizen. It represents the first true slice of gameplay that includes much of what Star Citizen will bring to our fans: thrilling space combat in a massive play area, first person battles, and multi-crew ships where you and your friends can adventure together in a portion of the universe on the same ship."

The Alpha 2.0 update of "Star Citizen" adds the Extra Vehicular Activity feature. It allows players to detach from their ship's airlock and explore the vastness of space. The update also adds more than 20 additional random encounters. Another significant inclusion is Quantum Travel, which allow player ships to travel space at 0.2 the speed of light.

A handful of flyable ships were also included in the update. Among these are the Constellation, the Vanguard and the Retaliator. The Large World tech also allows players to explore a vast area of space without loading screens.

"Star Citizen" was able to achieve the record through various crowdfunding avenues like Kickstarter. In order to raise funds outside of the traditional crowdfunding scheme, the game's developers decided to release packages and pre-purchase of ships. The cost of these features range from a few dollars up to $15,000. The price tag might sound ludicrous for casual gamers, but as it turns out they are selling.
