China Shows Military Might By Conducting War Games Within Disputed South China Sea

China has conducted wargames in the disputed South China Sea this week following the US Pacific Command warning about a potential arms race in the region

Showing its military might, this week China carried out a series of military war games within the disputed South China Sea. During the drill, the Chinese Army, Navy, and Air Force assets simulated attacks on enemy targets.

Warships, submarines, and fighter jets simulated cruise missile strikes on ships and other enemy naval assets, the People's Liberation Army Daily said on Friday..

The PLA, on its cover story, said the drill was carried out on Wednesday on thousands of square feet near the South China Sea.

During the drill, the Chinese military forces, which were split into blue and red team, were tested on their reaction to various naval situations thrown at them by their commanders.

One of the several naval scenarios included a missile strike accidentally hitting a business ship operated by a third party, the newspaper said.

Reports indicate tat several of the warships also simulated deflecting anti-missile attacks, and operating in tandem with submarines, early warning aircraft, and fighter jets.

China regularly announces its wargames in the disputed waters to show that it is transparent in its dealings with other claimant countries to the islands and reefs.

China claims almost all of the energy-rich waters in the South China Sea in which a $5 trillion maritime trade passes every year.

The Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan have overlapping claims to the disputed waters.

On Monday, the US Pacific Fleet Commander warned about a potential arms race in the region as most of the claimant countries are tempted to settle their claims militarily.

Washington is at odds with China over the latter's building of military facilities within the disputed reefs and islands and have even reclaimed artificial islands to expand their territory.

This week, China had accused the United States of militarizing the region when it sent its spy plane, Poseidon 8, to Singapore.

The two countries have been trading accusations of militarizing the region. The US has been patrolling the region aerially and near the South China Sea waters angering China.
