The High-Tech Computer Corporation, better known as HTC, has launched the HTC One M8 that runs on Microsoft's Windows Phone OS.

The smartphone, which already has an existing model running on Google's Android operating system, is exclusive to the United States and Verizon Wireless subscribers.

It can be availed for a US$30 per month via the Verizon Edge financing plan or at a promotional price of US$100 with a two-year contract. Consumers can buy the smartphone on the Internet starting from noon Aug. 19 and at retail stores the next day.

Verizon has also upped the ante with its exclusive agreement with NFL Mobile. Subscribers of Verizon's More Everything plan will receive NFL Mobile for the whole 2014-2015 professional American football season.

They'll get access to the NFL Network and to live streaming of games on their device with no strings attached.

The tech company from Taiwan has been striving to hold on to its consumers in the wake of several months of dwindling sales.

In spite of providing critically acclaimed products, HTC has been bumped off the top ranking smartphone manufacturers, incapable of competing with the much bigger advertising allowances of powerhouses in the industry such as Apple, Samsung or Sony.

Adding a version of the HTC One M8 running on Microsoft's operating system introduces the device to Windows Phone's loyal users. This group of consumers, however, is still minute, with the operating system getting only 2.5 percent of the smartphone market as of the second quarter of the year, according to IDC.

The HTC One M8 sports a 5-inch screen with 1,920-by-1,080 pixel resolution; front-facing "BoomSound" stereo speakers; a dual-lens back camera and an aluminum construction.
