Following the August 3 devastating earthquake, the province of Yunnan, China, an area prone to seismic activity, was hit again by an earthquake early Thursday.

The quake, with a recorded magnitude of 4.2, affected Bai Autonomous Prefecture of Dali particularly in Binchuan County where China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported a 12-kilometer deep epicenter.

Authorities in the area are currently looking into the situation though there were no reports of injured or damaged structures as of Thursday noon.

According to Zhao Zhizhen, an official in the county, many felt the trembling and rushed out of their homes and offices.

Meanwhile, a similar magnitude quake nearby was also reported in the autonomous counties of Yi and Ning'er Hani in Yunnan at around 9:47 a.m. China time Tuesday.

Its epicenter at 23.1 degrees north latitude and 101.0 degrees east longitude is seen to be 5 kilometers deep, the CENC reported.

Southwest China's Yunnan Province is known to be susceptible to earthquakes as it has been dubbed one of the 'more seismically active' provinces in the country.

Characteristically, the epicentral region is known for its shallow strike-slip faulting.

The devastating earthquake which occurred August 3 in Ludian, northeast of Yunnan, recorded casualties of more than 600 while 80,000 households were destroyed.

A series of quakes in September 2012 also claimed over 80 lives and wounded 821 residents in the area.

In the past, Yunnan has recorded more powerful quakes including a 7.7-magnitude quake that killed at least 15,000 residents in January 1970. According to reports, damages amounted to five to 25 million U.S. dollars.

Its epicenter was laid 97 kilometers from Geiju and 121 kilometers southwest of Kunming.

The shake, which was unexpected because geologists believed the fault line along the area was 'dead,' was also felt across an almost 9,000 square-kilometer area, affecting Hanoi in the northern part of Vietnam.
