A range of rare Chinese ceramics bought by a farmer and archaeologist for mere change (as low as $144 per item) are set to bring his family a fortune as their values have soared to as much as $29 million when put up for auction.

The late Roger Pilkington from Aldbourne, Wiltshire, has a collection of 100 pieces of antique Chinese ceramics that date back from the 1950s to 1960s. He reportedly bought the exquisite items from the Tang, Ming, Song and Qing dynasties between 618 and 1912. The items were worth $140 to $7,000 before, and if converted today, it will only range between $4,300 and $200,000, respectively.

During the 19th century, several Chinese exquisite ceramic pieces were taken by westerners. Today, with the Chinese people intent on taking back these heirlooms, prices of these antique pieces have surged high, giving the Pilkington's family a relatively big return of investment.

His collection remained with his family after his death in 1969; however, currently, the items are set for auction at Sotheby's.

Key items from the collection include a 15th century Chenghua blue and white Palace Bowl that was created for the Ming dynasty's emperor. It is reportedly so rare that not all big museums has a display. Now valued at $9 million, auctioneers claim that the bowl is particularly unique because of the unusually large number of melons painted on it.

Another hot item is a blue and white Ritual Holy Water Vessel, which dates back to the 15th century. Made during the Yongle period, the item was used for ceremonial gatherings. With only two companion pieces in the world, it now has a value of $6 million.

Other items are a blue and white Moonflask now valued at $4.3 million and a incised White-Glazed Vase at $115,000. The moonflask is evidence of China's trading link with the Middle East as the shape and decorations of the ceramics were inspired from Middle Eastern models. The vase has been described as an "exceptional and rare" item.

Describing Pilkington's collection, Southeby's Asia deputy chairman Nicolas Chow said the pieces are the "kind seldom seen together on the market." He further said that this is a rare chance for collectors to discover one-of-a-kind treasures.

Pilkington, who was finished his studies at Eton, was a member of a family who runs a glass-making firm. During his time, he has been known as one of the 'most eminent and active' collectors.

The auction for Pilkington's collection will be held on April 6 at Hong Kong.
