Data reveals that China has spent over 2 trillion yuan (nearly $304 billion) on water projects from 2011 to 2015. Up to 800 billion yuan was invested in more than 170 major water conservation and supply projects. Vice Water Resource Minister Jiao Yong said that over the past 5 years, these water projects have been improved, and authorities have implemented the "strictest" management system for water resource.

As part of the 13th five-year development plan (for 2016 and 2020), the government will continue to concentrate on improving water safety and enhancing reforms for water resource utilization. To manage major water projects, the ministry will also continue to utilize all available financial grants and formulate conditions for private enterprises to invest.

Over the next five years, the priority will be on delivering more water project investment to poor areas.

China is planning to set up at least 20 large water conservation projects to enhance investment and sustain growth. The Ministry of Water Resource has revealed that the total budget for these projects should be not less than 800 billion yuan ($126.2 billion).

Last year, between January and October, the ministry started 27 water projects, which magnetized nearly 115 million yuan of investment. Once finalized, the projects would supply up to 7.2 million cubic meters of  water and generate approximately 320,000 kilowatts of electricity.

Of the 27 new water projects, 21 were established in the central and western regions to bring economic and social benefits to these areas.
