China to Invest More in Malaysia

Chinese companies have not been held back by the recent slow progress of the country's economy as several firms are planning to pour investment into Malaysia this year. According to local media and officials, many Chinese companies are going out under the Belt and Road Initiative programs.

Rather than being dismayed about the country's economic performance, Chinese companies have stepped up pace to venture abroad.

Motivated by the Belt and Road Initiatives, Malaysia can expect a surge in investment and takeover by Chinese companies in the next years to come, according to Oriental Daily, a local Chinese newspaper in Malaysia.

Trade relations between Malaysia and China have gotten stronger throughout the years. Since 2009, China has been the largest trading partner of Malaysia. In turn, Malaysia has become China's largest trading partner in the Southeast. In 2015, the total bilateral trade volume resulted in earnings of more than $97.3 billion.

Since then, Malaysia has doubled its efforts to secure more investment from China.

Malaysian businessmen with Chinese lineage were prominently drawn to China's many opportunities when the communist nation first opened its economy more than three decades ago.

According to Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the total approved investment in manufacturing by Chinese firms since 2005 amounts to around $4.4 billion.

One of the biggest companies in China, Huawei, has set up a regional headquarter and data center in Malaysia. Huawei is an information and communication technology giant known all over the world. More so, China's real estate companies such as Country Garden and Greenland have also made headway in Malaysia.

One of China's leading clean energy companies, China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), has signed an equity purchase agreement with Malaysian energy company Edra Global Energy last November. They intend to buy 12 clean energy projects that will be spread in Malaysia, Egypt, Bengal, Pakistan and UAE.
