Tech giant Google has announced that it modifying the software that runs its self-driving car after an incident, which caused the car to collide with a bus. Google claimed partial responsibility for the incident.

A recent filing revealed that Google struck a municipal bus in a minor accident early in February. This is the first case where Google's autonomous cars has hit another vehicle. While some of Google's self-driving cars have seen minor accidents - it was mostly due to the fault of the human driver and not Google's software.

The report filed with California regulators was dated Feb. 23 and was made public on Feb. 29. The report said that the incident involving Google's car and a bus took place in Mountain View, California on Feb. 14. The incident involves a modified Lexus RX450h which, according to the report, was trying to get around some sandbags in a wide lane.

Google stated on the report that the autonomous car was traveling at less than two miles per hour. On the other hand, the bus was cruising at about 15 miles per hour. Google added that the autonomous vehicle's software, along with a test driver, assumed that the bus would give way to Google's car to continue on its course. A few seconds later, Google's car, which was in autonomous mode, re-entered the center of the lane and struck the side of the bus.

The minor collision left minor damages to the left front fender, front wheel and some driver side sensor of the Google car.

In a statement, Google said, "In this case, we clearly bear some responsibility, because if our car hadn't move there wouldn't have been a collision."

The company added that the experience will teach the artificial intelligence that drives its autonomous car the idea that buses, or other large vehicles for that matter, are less likely to give way to its cars than other types of vehicles.
