Slower growth on human children caused by too much brain activity

Researchers are currently solving the human mystery on why children's growth is slower than human's closest animal relatives.

Anthropologists from Northern University said that the brain of five year old uses glucose twice as much than a fully-grown adult.

They said that their findings showed that during childhood the energy funneled in the brain dominates the metabolism of humans.

This is probably the reason why human grow slowly than other mammals during childhood, they added.

Christopher Kuzawa, one of the researchers, said that humans need a huge quantity of resources to develop the human brain.

Hence, the reason why the body can't afford to grow faster during the toddler and childhood years, he added.

Kuzawa explained that humans require learning complex things that result to an energy-hungry brain.

Their findings also showed that children grow slowly and becomes dependent for a long time because the human body needs to use a huge fraction of its resources to the brain leaving little resources for body growth.

Kuzawa said that body growth nearly stops to the ages when the brain is developing a rapid pace because the brain is using most of its available resources.

He also said that during this age the brain connection in a child max out because this is the time that humans learn how to be successful beings.

William Leonard, one of the researchers, said that at the peak in childhood the brain burns two thirds of the calories use to rest because of these, humans doesn't only grow slowly but where also less physically active.

He added their findings suggest that humans grow slowly to compensate for busy childhood brains.
