AT&T Announces Additional Data Caps for Home Broadband Plans

AT&T has announced that it will boost its data caps on its home Internet plans, adding a new option for anyone that uses data caps by hundreds of gigs of data.

Customers with A&T's U-Verse broadband and TV service or subscribers of DirecTV will get unlimited home Internet data at no extra charge. Otherwise, AT&T will charge $30 a month for unlimited internet only. If the user is not on the unlimited plan and exceed the data cap, they will receive increments of 50 GB of additional data for $10 each.

The new changes indicate that customers who had a limit of 250GB per month with 768Kbps to 6Mbps speed will now have a 300GB allotment before facing surcharges. AT&T says the new data cap is enough watch up to 100 hours of high-definition video streaming. Meanwhile, their clients with the fastest connections will continue to have a one terabyte a month data cap.

In addition, as the plans get faster, customers with speeds between 12Mbps to 75Mbps will get data caps rise from 250GB to 600GB and plans between 100Mbps to 1Gbps will receive a new data cap of 1TB, which is 50GB before.

The new data caps and the option for unlimited data will start is effectively on May 23. AT&T will send warnings to anyone who is getting close to their data cap for the month. According to an AT&T representative, roughly four percent of AT&T U-Verse subscribers are already exceeding the levels of the new data caps.

AT&T’s data cap is also akin to Comcast's new unlimited data option, which begun rolling out in selected markets last fall. Comcast also charges $30 a month extra for unlimited data.

The wireless company has been experimenting with data caps for its broadband customers long enough. In 2008, it has experimented with a 150GB per month limit and was extended to all DSL customers in 2011.
