Katy Perry's Purchase of Former Los Angeles Convent Cleared by Judge

Katy Perry is one step closer to buying a former convent she has been eyeing since last year after a judge voided the property's sale to a Los Angeles-based businesswoman.

The property in question is a former Catholic convent and has been the subject of a real-estate dispute between Perry, an order of nuns, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and a restaurateur named Dana Hollister.

The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary claim that they were the rightful owners of the Los Feliz hilltop property and sold it to Hollister for $15.5 million last year.

However, Jose Gomez, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, claims that the church was under the legal ownership of the real estate and filed legal papers in court last year, seeking to void the unauthorized sale to Hollister.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Stephanie Bowick cancelled the deed and invalidated the sale of the property to Hollister on Wednesday, stating that the sisters had executed the sale to the businesswoman improperly and without authorization from the Archbishop.

Perry, 31, who has set her sights on the property, had even met the sisters and sang the gospel hymn Oh Happy Day with them. But after doing some research on the pop-star, the nuns were not impressed with the Roar singer.

"Well, I found Katy Perry, and I found her videos and ... if it's all right to say, I wasn't happy with any of it," Sister Rita Callanan said at the time.

Bowick's decision has now cleared the way for Perry, who is willing to shell out $14.5 million for the 8-acre estate. Although the purchase has already been approved by the Archbishop, an approval from the Vatican is still pending.
