U.S. Open: Federer Advances after Rain; Teen Bencic makes it to Quarterfinals

After the rain interrupted Roger Federer and Marcel Granollers' match, the Swiss rallied to advance to the fourth round, while 17-year-old Belinda Bencic makes it to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows New York on Sunday.

A hot and windy afternoon quickly put the second seeded Federer in jeopardy as he fell behind in the first set 2-5 but then rain interrupted the clash that seemed to have helped the Swiss as he rallied, starting the second set, 18 to 3 games to advance to the fourth round.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion produced 13 service aces and 57 winners to finish the Spaniard in just under two hours.

The Swiss will now play another Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut who Federer admitted of not having played against.

"Never played him," Federer said. "He's not the typical Spaniard with a lot of topspin. But I'm looking forward to the match."

Meantime, Bencic became the fourth woman to enter the quarterfinals after defeating ninth-seeded Jelena Jankovic, 7(8)-6(6), 6-3 in a two-hour match.

The Swiss teenager became the youngest player after Martina Hingis to make it into the quarterfinals.

Hingis and Bencic are quite close since Hingis' mother, Melanie Molitor, coaches her on occasions. Hingis gave her some advice since she played Jankovic a number of times that seemed to have helped the teen.

"She told me to hold the rallies," Bencic said. "I have to be aggressive. I had to pay attention to her backhand down the line."

"Her backhand is just amazing, so I tried to push it to her forehand," Bencic added.

Bencic defeated sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber in the third round and now faces China's Peng Shuai who defeated 14th-seeded Lucie Sarafova earlier.

Shuai also defeated Rogers Cup champion fourth-seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round and also enters the quarterfinals for the first time in her career.
