Motorola former president Rick Osterloh was recently hired by Google to run the tech giant's newest division that will unify all of its hardware projects.

Reports claim that Osterloh will work as Google's Senior Vice President for the company's hardware product line and will report directly to Google chief executive Sundar Pichai.

While Google might be a giant in terms of Internet-based products and services, the company is yet to establish its dominance in the hardware market. Google even went as far as tapping third-party hardware manufacturers to handle its manufacturing demands for some of its flagship devices.

Last month, Google lost one of its hardware chiefs to its closest rival, Facebook. Regina Dugan was the head of Google Advanced Technology and Project group was snatched by Facebook. Following Dugan's departure, reports claim that Google is planning to create a hardware arm that will shake the market.

According to Recode, Osterloh's main task is to oversee Google's hardware projects, like the Nexus line of devices, the Google Chromecast, OnHob, ATAP, Glass, and other consumer hardware like the Chromebook and Pixel C.

Back in the days when Motorola was owned by Google, Osterloh was able to work his way up the ranks. He was able to move from head of product management to become the president of business when Dennis Woodside departed for Dropbox.

Osterloh remained as head of Motorola after it was sold by Google to Lenovo. However, Osterloh decided to left Motorola despite the fact that the Chinese hardware company is gearing up for a major reorganization.

Osterloh might be familiar with some of Google's hardware division. According to Slash Gear, the Advanced Technology and Projects group, or ATAP, actually had its roots in Motorola way before Google bought the company. The ATAP group is one of the most innovative hardware division in Google, responsible for Project Ara which aims to develop and create the world's first fully modular smartphone.
