Russian leader Vladimir Putin warned both the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the West to back off from its conflict with Ukraine, and NATO responded by announcing they will not back up Kiev no matter what Putin does.

This week, NATO is set to have a meeting to come up with a plan for their "rapid response" to the Russia-Ukraine crisis and to let  Putin understand that they will do anything to protect the nations under their wing.

NATO deputy secretary general Alexander Vershbow released a statement prior to the summit this Thursday which will be held in Wales. He said that the military moves by Russia against Ukraine urged them to defend their alliance's territories.

Vershbow added that the plan they will be announcing this week will include thousands of  troops that will be stationed somewhere in Eastern Europe. These troops will be able to deploy all their planes in just 48 hours whenever a crisis erupts.

Vershbow made it clear that their plan will not be extended to Ukraine since it is not a member of the organization. He added that Ukraine will no doubt be fighting Russia alone since the latter has not yet crossed a "red line."

The deputy secretary general also said that Ukraine understands that they are not a benieficiary of NATO's Article 5, which guarantees the defense of its members. However, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will attend the meeting on Thursday as a non-member observer.

Vershbow explained that they will roll out some plans for assisting Ukraine but it may not turn out to be what everybody hopes to happen. NATO is not the only responder in this situation as he also cited the European Union (EU) and the United States.

Last week, Ukraine's president asked NATO if they can be considered for a full membership of the organization but was met with an unsympathetic response. NATO seeks to avoid military confrontations with Russia.

Upon knowing NATO's plans, a senior Kremlin officer released a statement saying Russia will soon adjust its military dogma due to the increased military presence in Europe.

The EU, U.S. and Canada imposed sanction programs targeting Russia's economy in the last few weeks. However, Russia seemed unfazed with the sanctions and even launched nuclear threats against the West.
