Fight fans are salivating over the possibility of a showdown between boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and UFC star Conor McGregor.

Both fighters have dropped hints that the fight could happen. McGregor posted a photo on Twitter of the two fighters in a stare down, and Mayweather talked as though the fight has a chance of coming about.

"It's possible you know," said Mayweather. "Keep your fingers crossed, it may be a boxer versus an MMA fighter."

The Sun quoted a source as saying the fight "was agreed [to] in principle on May 2."

The source also claimed that "Floyd is calling the shots. It's strictly boxing and Conor will have to lose roughly 25lbs."

Legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach fueled more speculation when he said McGregor reached out to request training.

"They did ask me if I'll train him," said Roach. "I said 'sure, bring him down.' I'd like to see[him], meet the guy and see what he has."

Despite all the reported progress, UFC Dana White told ESPN that the fight is not likely to happen, pointing out the years of negotiation between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao before their mega-fight.

"Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are in the same sport," said White. "Now imagine how hard it would be to get [Mayweather and McGregor] to fight. They're not in the same sport."

If the fight were to actually take place, the experts seem to agree: in a boxing match, Mayweather dominates The Notorious; in an MMA-style fight, McGregor destroys Money Mayweather.

"This strikes me as common sense," MMA analyst Brett Okamoto said of a boxing-rules fight. "We're talking about the greatest boxer of his era against a nonboxer."

If McGregor could convince Mayweather to enter the octagon, though, "McGregor's kickboxing would separate Mayweather from consciousness in a matter of minutes, possibly seconds," said Okamoto.
