A man in southwest China has shown unusual hospitality to a pair of birds – by opting to share his apartment with them for a while.

The man discovered that two Daurian redstarts were building their nest inside his fifth floor home in Nanchong in Sichuan province, according to the Chengdu Business Daily. Instead of driving the birds away, he decided to share the space with them for a while.

The man discovered the birds when he went home and found some grass, roots and moss lying on his living room floor. He would sweep it all away, and will find another batch of dirt scattered around after some time.

Two days later, he saw two birds fly into his apartment carrying some grass in their beaks. Seeing that, he realized that they were probably building a nest on the ceiling, so he decided to do his best not to disturb the birds.

The man decided to eat dinner outside before going home, either in his parents’ home or in restaurants. He also kept the lights down to avoid disturbing the birds. More than that, he also gave up one of his favorite pastimes: watching football on his living room television.

Earlier this month, the man was surprised to see the birds bringing worms to the nest, while hearing the chirping of smaller birds. Excited to see what was happening, the man stood up on chairs and took a photo of the nest, which had four new nestlings inside.

A week and a half later, the man went home to find his home marked with bird droppings, and the four young birds practicing flight. A couple of hours later, all the birds were gone. The man did not throw the nest away, however, as he is hoping that the birds will return after some time.
