PayPal has announced that by June 30 it will force all of its Android and iOS users to update their mobile version of its app into version 6 if they have not yet made the upgrade. PayPal added that it is also cutting ties with Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and Android Fire, which means that the online digital payment giant will no longer support the mentioned operating systems.

PayPal did not explain why it is shutting down its support for Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and Android Fire.

PayPal vice president Joanna Lambert mentions that users can still access the PayPal's mobile website, and it is still possible to send P2P payments through BBM or send money via Outlook.

In a statement acquired by Engadget, Lambert said, "It was a difficult decision to no longer support the PayPal app on these mobile platforms, but we believe it's the right thing to ensure we are investing our resources in creating the very best experiences for our customers."

PayPal explained that although native apps on Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and Android Fire are no longer available, affected users can still access PayPal through the company's mobile website. Through this, users can still manage their account and financial transactions.

PayPal said that by ceasing to support Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and Android Fire, the company would be able to focus more on improving user experience for Android and iOS platforms, according to The Verge. Many tech analysts said that PayPal's latest decision might be commercially motivated, especially since Android and iOS make up the biggest chunk of mobile users.

The latest news from PayPal comes in after the company revealed that it will no longer offer purchase protection for users in the United States who donate to various crowdfunding platforms. The decision antagonized some users, especially those who are using the platforms which PayPal is dropping its support.
