Badminton: China Maintains Dominance in the BCA Indonesia Open 2016

(Photo : gettyimages.com) Current world No. 6 and tourney’s sixth-seed Tian Houwei kept his chances of winning his first Indonesia Open title after defeating the 34-year-old world No. 14 Hu Yun of Hong Kong China in a tough quarterfinal match.


Chinese badminton players continued to dominate in the ongoing BCA Indonesia Open BWF World Super Series Premier event at the the Istola Galera Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.


The representatives of the Asian badminton powerhouse successfully navigated their way to the semifinal round of the tournament, which carries a top prize of US $900,000, by defeating their respective opponents and entering the next stage of the competition.

Current World No. 6 and tourney's sixth-seed, Tian Houwei, kept his chances of winning his first Indonesia Open title alive after defeating 34-year-old World No. 14, Hu Yun of Hong Kong, in a tough quarterfinal match.

The 2016 Asian Championship bronze medalist lost the first set but rallied in the next two games to win 14-21, 21-15, 21-18 and set a semifinal showdown against the Danish World No. 5 and fifth-seeded, Jan O. Jorgensen, who ousted Indonesian Jonatan Christie 14-21, 21-19, 21-14.

In the women's singles, World No. 3, Wang Yihan, and World No. 6, Wang Shixian, both advanced to the last four of the event after overcoming their respective quarterfinal opponents. Wang Yihan triumphed over Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea 21-18, 13-21, 22-20 while Wang Shixian nosed out compatriot World No. 13, Sun Yu, with a 18-21, 21-19, 21-16 win.

The Chinese tandem of Chai Biao and Hon Wei outplayed the Malaysian pair of Wee Kiong Tan and V Shem Goh in two straight set 21-18, 21-17 victory to advance to the next round of the men's doubles event. While in the women's double, the combination of Yu Yang and Tang Yuanting scored a quarterfinal win against South Korea's Lee So Hee and Chang Ye Na with a 11-21, 22-20, 21-14 score.

In the mixed doubles event, the top seeded pair of Zhao Yunlei enjoyed a 21-11, 10-21, 21-14 victory over the Indonesian tandem of Alfian Eko Prasetya and Annisa Saufika. The pair of Xu Chen and Ma Jin, Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong also managed to enter the semifinal stage of the competition, which takes place on Saturday.
