Japanese video game developer and publisher Sega has announced that it is bringing the groundbreaking virtual reality technology developed by Australian startup Zero Latency to Japan.

Zero Latency is a Melbourne-based startup that made waves in the tech community when it launched a multiplayer, free-roam virtual reality experience in a warehouse situated in the middle of the city.

Sega announced its partnership with Zero Latency during the former's Live Creation event held on Tuesday. Sega said that it is brining Zero Latency's popular virtual reality experience to Japan.

During the Live Creation event, Sega Live Executive Vice President Kazuhiko Hayami said, "We are only at the early stages of understanding what free-roam VR is capable of. It's one of the most exciting technologies coming to the market today."

Sega is giving Zero Latency a new home in Tokyo's amusement park called Joypolis. Sega and Zero Latency confirmed that the attraction will open its doors on July 16.

Unlike most virtual reality headset, Zero Latency's hardware supports wireless technology that can track players while they roam through a space as big as a standard warehouse. Virtual reality headsets like the HTC Vive also supports this kind of tracking technology, but it is only limited to a smaller perimeter.

Zero Latency's virtual reality experience supports up to six players all at the same time. Every player is visible to each other as avatars. The game pits players against a horde of zombies, and they must work together as a team in order to survive and complete the mission.

While Zero Latency currently offers a zombie game, Sega said that it is developing a custom experience that will add new content and weapons to the game.

Zero Latency co-director Tim Ruse told Mashable that they are working on a shorter and more arcade-style version of the original zombie game for Sega. This will include new characters and environments.

Aside from the Sega collaboration, Zero Latency hinted that it is working on deals to release its game in regions like the United States, Europe, and China.
