FIBA U17 World Championship: Following Game Opener Defeat China Beats Australia to Claim Tournament’s First Victory

After suffering their opening game loss against Finland, the China national under-17 basketball team bounced back and registered the squad's first victory at the expense of the Australians with a 90-72 win in the group stage of the ongoing 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship in Zaragoza, Spain on Saturday.

China's 17-year-old 6-foot-4 starting guard Haotian Bai led the national team with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Bai went 8 for 15 from the floor and shot 3 for 3 from the foul line. Fellow starter Yibo Wang added 14 points while Xiangbo Li and Yanman Zhao chipped in with 12 points each.

The young Chinese team dominated the game with an impressive 64 percent shooting percentage from the two-point range, compared to the 43 percent the Aussies registered. China converted 19 of the 26 free shots awarded to the team, while the team of Australia missed 14 of the 29 shots from the foul line.

China moved the ball a little better with 13 dimes compared to the opposing team's 10 assists. The young Asian giants also got the better of the Australians in fast-break points, as the PRC scored six points in transition while the players from the Down Under scored none.

China entered the third period of the game leading 46-30 and continued to pound the 11th ranked Australians with a 17-12 outburst to widen the gap with to 63-42 as the third quarter ended.

In the game's final twelve minutes, China was able to coast to victory.

China will be facing undefeated Group C leading team Canada on Sunday. The current world No.3 Canadians are fresh off a spectacular 92-68 win over Finland.
