Japan to Build World's Largest Floating Solar Power Plants

The construction of two of the world's largest floating solar plants is set to begin in late September in Japan.

Plans have begun to build a series of floating solar plants that when linked together will have a generating capacity of 60 MW.

For Japan, the typical issue in construction is room to build. Having enough free land and space to develop certain projects is sometimes impossible.

Japan, however, does have an abundance of surrounding ocean.

Kyocera Corporation, Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation and Ciel Terre have announced they'll be teaming up to build the two largest floating solar power plants in the world.

Kyocera expects to have the two solar plants up and running by the beginning of April next year.

Kyocera, a solar panel company, recently constructed 28 solar power plants. Of this number, 11 are in operation and producing renewable energy.

The two new plants will be located at Nishihira Pond and Higashihira Pond in Kato City, in the Hyogo region.

The new floating system will be constructed from a series of newly updated solar panels, on top of a newly patented bracketing system. The newly patented bracket serves many purposes.

The brackets keep these very expensive solar panels from sinking to the ocean floor, and also allow for easy cooling of the panels. They'll allow easy access for any necessary repairs.

Plans are underway to develop a large series of solar plant all across Japan's ocean borders to produce some 80 MW of renewable power by the end of the year.

By 2017, Japan is expected to receive 70 percent of its power from solar powered renewable energy plants.
