Twenty-six people died in a bus explosion tragedy in Taiwan on Tuesday, July 19. Twenty-four of the total casualties are reported to be tourists from mainland China. To date, the police are still baffled about what caused the tragedy, and why not even one person survived the accident despite the multiple exit points in the vehicle.

According to the South China Morning Post, the incident is, by far, the deadliest bus-related fire in the area for the past 24 years.

The police said that the explosion started when the front part of the vehicle tragically burst into flames. The vehicle eventually crashed into a road fence. The accident happened on Taiwan's Highway No. 2 when the bus was just about a few minutes away from the Taoyuan International Airport.

A police officer named Lu Jui-yao made a statement saying that "none of the passengers survived the accident." He added that even the tour guide and the bus driver died in the explosion and fire. He said that nine bodies were found at the back of the vehicle and assumed that they were trying to escape the imminent danger.

Three children - a boy and two girls - reportedly lost their lives in the accident. They are estimated to be 13 years old. The Taiwan Tourism Bureau confirmed that all the tourists on the bus were on their way home after an eight-day scenic tour to the island, which included a visit to the Alishan and Sun Moon Lake in Central Taiwan.
