India on Wednesday signed a contract to acquire four maritime spy planes from US-based Boeing Co for about $1 billion, Reuters reported, citing inside sources.

The new defense deal is aimed at strengthening Indian Navy as New Delhi seeks to keep track of China's growing presence in the Indian Ocean region. The Indian government has already deployed eight long-range P-8I aircrafts to keep a tab on the Chinese navy in the region. This includes deployment of P8-I aircraft in waters of remote Andaman and Nicobar islands.

"It's a follow-on order, it was signed today," an Indian defense ministry official told Reuters on the condition of anonymity. Another defense official said that four aircrafts are expected to enter service over the next three years.

Amrita Dhindsa, the Indian spokeswoman for Boeing defense and space, said she is not in a position to comment on the contract.

The deal reflects the growing military cooperation between India and the United States. The United States, over the years, has replaced Russia to emerge as India's top military supplier.

Indian Navy Trying To Counter China

New Delhi has been trying to shore up its maritime surveillance capabilities to counter China's growing influence in the Indian Ocean region. China has reportedly sent several submarines to the Indian Ocean region, including a nuclear-powered boat that is stationed in Sri Lanka.

Indian experts have touted China's attempt to increase its influence in Indian Ocean region as a 'string of pearls' strategy. Experts claim that the strategy is aimed at surrounding India in the Indian Ocean region through a network of Chinese military and commercial facilities.
