China Unicom announced that starting Oct. 1, the company will drop all domestic long distance call charges, as well as roaming charges. The decision was made public by China Unicom chairman Wang Xiaochu during the company's annual interim results conference, according to China Tech News.

Wang Xiaochu said that it is adopting the practices of other global telecommunications providers, a majority of which have implemented standards that decrease monthly charges for mobile phone users. Regarding its long-term goals, China Unicom is looking to create a diverse set of user groups, all of which will have different monthly charges depending on their plan or usage.

China Unicom also openly expressed its plans to drop domestic long distance call charges and roaming charges before the end of the year. China Telecom was the first to implement this kind of billing scheme wherein calls, and SMS costs are billed using unified flow charges.

In similar news, China Unicom reported that its profits dropped by 80.6 percent during the first half of the year. China Unicom reported $68.18 million in total net profits within the first six months of the year. China Unicom said that the drop in profits was due to the company's increased spending in terms of operational cost, according to China Daily.
