Chinese Olympians made the country proud on Friday in the weightlifting division after they bagged five gold medals and broke a 16-year-old world record at the Rio Olympics.

Olympic Gold medalist Long Qingquan (Men's' 56kgs) broke a 16-year-old record which was set by Turkey's Halil Mutlu in 2000. He broke the record by lifting 307kgs; 2kgs greater than the previous holder.

"I had two targets for the Rio Games, winning the gold medal and breaking the world record. I achieved both," said Long after he captured his second Olympic gold medal. "I owe so much to my wife and my child for making my Olympic dream come true and would like to spend more time with them in future."

Another gold medalist Deng Wei (womens'63kgs) became China's first-ever women weightlifter to win gold and set a new world record. She had been chosen to replace a Li Yajun after the later failed a doping test.

"I was tense because of the pressure, but once the event started everything went smoothly," she said. "I just followed the plan, including breaking the world record."

After he had been dropped from the squad due to an injury, it came as a surprise when the 2008 Olympic champion and 2015 world champion Shi Zhiyong (men's'69kgs)  won the gold.

In her first ever Olympic day, Xiang Yanmei (women's 69kgs) set out to make her country proud, and she did so successfully. However, her dream to break the world record was not fulfilled. The 2010 national champion is, however, optimistic after she finished the event with a total weight of 261.

After winning her gold medal Meng Suping (women's 75kgs and above) humbled herself before the crowd by bowing three times on the floor.

"I am always ready and willing to represent my country and was training on my own, even though I saw off my teammates for Brazil," she said.
