General Motors to Intensify Production of Electric Vehicles in China

General Motors will be intensifying the launch of its electric vehicles in China, Larry Nitz, GM Executive Director for Electrification, said.

The News Wheel reported that the first part of the plan would include putting up a battery assembly plant in Shanghai to locally produce battery through the company's ShanghaiAutomotive Industry Corporation (SAIC)-General Motors joint venture.

General Motor's next plan involves expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the launch of the new Chevy Malibu XL Hybrid, the Buick LaCrosse Hybrid, and the Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid. These vehicle models are expected to have outstanding fuel efficiency through its plug-in powertrain, with Malibu XL reaching 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers, LaCross Hybrid with 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers, and CTG with nearly 1.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

Both the Malibu XL and La CrosseHyrbid would share powertrain, featuring a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine attached to a two-motor electric drive unit and a 1.5-kWh battery. On the other hand, the CT6 boasts of an 80-km electric range with a power of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder engine.

Amid the tough competition in the world's largest car market, General Motors posted positive growth sales of seven percent after selling two million units last month, the Guru Focus reported. The company reported a gain in sales of 18 percent year-over-year by delivering more than 270,000 cars and trucks.

General Motors sold 1.8 million cars in the first half of the year, up 5.3 percent compared with the same period in 2015.
