Badminton Topped Television Viewership in China During the 2016 Rio Games

Badminton attracted a significant chunk of the television viewership in China during the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil last month.

The men's singles championship match between the current world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia and China's world No. 2 Chen Long was reportedly the most-watched event on state broadcaster CCTV5. The Olympic gold medal round match between the two of the world's top male shuttlers recorded 7.08 percent share of viewership.

Badminton dominated the most-watched list, with seven matches featuring in the top ten. Lee Chong Wei and China's two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan's semifinal match ends up in third at 5.91 percent followed by Lin's quarterfinal showdown against Kidambi Srikanth of India at 4.95 percent.

The racquet sport is continually becoming more popular in China. China is a very big country with a population of about 1.3 billion people and with about 100 million people in the land that take part in badminton, it is no wonder why the sport is greatly being followed by many of the Chinese viewers.
