A family planning authority in Hong Kong has cited women’s low sex drive for low birth rates in the country.
The Hong Kong Family Planning Association said women’s appetite to have sex with their partners is the reason behind low birth rates. According to the association, the birth rates in 1981 for every 1000 women were recorded at 1,933. This showed a slow decline compared to the data recorded in 2012 showing 1,285 births for every 1000 women.

A poll was conducted by the family planning authority among 2,100 ethnic Chinese women aged 21 to 40. Out of ten, six said they had one problem. From that number, 400 said they had no drive to have sex at all. On the other hand, from the same group, 430 women experienced discomfort while having sex while 500 said they were not able to experience orgasms.
Family Planning Association senior director Dr. Lo Seen-tsing said the low drive for sex among many women was due to lack of communication with their partners. He said women are uncomfortable with talking about sex and rarely discuss it. He also added the problem is not having the desire but women’s perception that they are not supposed to have the desire at all.
The opinion of the association regarding low birth rates in Hong Kong is likely a result of society’s expectations of women, reported Shanghaiist. The report went on saying the study may have been biased and could cause a subconscious effect on the physical desires of women.
Meanwhile, Dr. Lo said he is confident that women nowadays are more open to the topic regarding sex compared to ten years ago. Whether or not birth rates in Hong Kong are affected with low sex drive among women, it is also considerable that raising a child in an expensive and populated area can be impractical.
