Controversial singer, Miley Cyrus has been added to the list of celebrities who have been victims of death hoaxes. A Facebook page made the rounds over the weekend announcing that Liam Hemsworth’s ex was found dead at her home in Los Angeles. The page, later described as scam, noted drug overdose as cause of death.

The FB page read: “{SHOCKING) Miley Cyrus Found Dead in Her Los Angeles Home! Country singer Miley Cyrus found overdosed this afternoon in her Los Angeles home.”
A close look at the page showed it was indeed a fake death.
The headlines used to catch readers’ attention provided the first hint that it was a hoax. It also showed that the scam was not well-thought out. The second line in the message described Miley as a “country singer.” Though it is true that Miley sings country songs, she is best known for her music from other genres including pop, rock and hip hope.
It also turned out that the Facebook page was merely a scam, designed to disseminate fraudulent surveys. When clicked, the Facebook user is redirected to a page with features like Facebook. The user then is asked to share the page before the video is played. When they do, no video would play showing Miley’s death.
The viral Facebook page apparently was created to help those behind it rake in money from Facebook users. The people behind the scam however, succeeded as the Facebook page spread all over the world wide web overnight, even causing fear for Miley’s fans.
If there’s one thing, the page was created at the best possible time - shortly after the list of nominees for the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards was announced. The death hoax came out just one year after Miley morphed from being a wholesome teen star to an all-out raunchy artist, like Lady Gaga and Madonna at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.
It will be recalled that Cyrus made headlines for weeks after the "controversial performance" with Robin Thicke singing "Blurred Lines," at last year's MTV VMAs.
The 21-year old singer is vying against Beyonce in the Video of the Year award for her song, “Wrecking Ball” at VMAs this year.
Miley has always been a magnet for bad publicity for her efforts to shed off her Disney days. Asserting her individuality, Miley has continued to prove that she could not be tamed.
A look at her online biography showed that Miley has gone a long way.
She released her debut album, “Meet Miley Cyrus,” with Hollywood Records in 2007. Creating her first hit single, “See You Again,” the first album was a huge success that it was certified as a quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Her second album, “Breakout” was released in 2008 and like the first, it was a success with its track, “7 Things.” She later appeared as a lead character in Disney Channel’s “Hannah Montana.”
She continued to gain popularity in the music industry as she released her third album in 2009,“EP The Time of Our Lives,” featuring her hit song, “Party in the USA.” The album hinted Miley beginning to assert her mature image which had begun in a different direction with the release of her fourth album “Can’t Be Tamed” in 2010.
It was about this time when she fell in love with Australian hunk, Liam Hemsworth when they met on the set of “The Last Song.” Despite the controversies she got herself embroiled in in the years to come, Hemsworth stood by Miley until 2013. The raunchy performance Miley had with Robin Thicke when they sang, “Blurred Lines,” was too much for Hemsworth that he decided it was time to let her go.
One year after the controversial performance that featured Miley in skimpy outfits then and her every performances thereafter, Miley is in the headlines again. Only this time, a “timely” death hoax.
