Reading FC manager Jaap Stam recently revealed that Shanghai SIPG striker Asamoah Gyan's poor bill of health was the reason why the reported summer move fell through.

Stam had confirmed that the 30-year-old Ghana national team captain "failed a medical with Reading" and that Gyan "wasn't in very good shape" when they tested him before finalizing a loan deal with the Chinese Super League giants, as per Get Reading.

Eventually, the move was turned down by the Championship club on deadline day as the medical tests revealed that Gyan needed "six to eight weeks before he was up to full fitness".

Rumors previously went out that Gyan was placed in the reserve squad of the Red Eagles following the £46 million Chinese transfer record-breaking signing of Brazilian star Hulk last June. The forward was not even suited up for the team in the first place because of recurring injuries and so speculations have emerged that SIPG needed more reinforcements to offset his game absences.

With that, Gyan requested to be loaned out immediately as he desired to play and several English teams were then linked to him, such as former club Sunderland, West Ham United, Hull City, and Reading.

After the reported move to Reading was cancelled, Gyan claimed that the club's unwillingness to allow him to play for his national team was the reason the deal fell through, to which Stam remarked as "rubbish" and then exposed the reason from their side.

"When he joined us they did a very good medical on him which was very important because he's been injured in the past. He hasn't been playing a lot of games," Stam said.

"He wasn't in good shape, that was the case. Of course the player says he was in good shape because he wants to play, but he wasn't. Our medical people are not going to be lying about that," the coach added.

Gyan eventually landed a season-long loan contract with Middle Eastern club Al-Ahli Dubai FC, his former club Al Ain arch-rivals in the UAE Pro League, Goal reported.
