Chinese Olympic competitive swimming champion Sun Yang has made it known to the world that he has set his sights on the upcoming Tokyo 2020 to retire.

According to the Swimming World, the 24-year-old Sun became a household name as an international swimmer in the year 2012 when he won the London Olympic Games gold medals in the 400m and 1500m freestyle event. He also set a world record in the 1500m free that still stands until today.

In August, the native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang added another gold medal in the events of the 200m free and a silver medal in the 400m freestyle to the long list of his swimming achievements. However, Sun, who was a seven-time World Aquatics Championship gold medalist, was unable to defend and retain his Olympic title in the 1500m freestyle after missing out on the event's finals.

Speaking with New China at an awards ceremony for the successful campaign of the Chinese Olympic swimming team in Huangshan, Sun said that he continues to train even after Rio and revealed his aspiration for a perfect career ending at the next quadrennial sporting event in Tokyo, Japan four years from now.

"I didn't skip training for a single day, and will keep training hard for the Tokyo Games, and I hope to win more gold medals there for a perfect ending of my swimming career," the multi-awarded Chinese swimmer said.

While Sun is the most decorated Chinese swimmer in history, controversy also surrounds him. He was ordered to serve a three-month doping ban in the year 2014 for the drug trimetazidine and was involved in a war of words in the warm-up pool while in Rio.
