China Telecom Enforces Real Name Registration of Phone Numbers

China Telecom

(Photo : Reuters) China Telecom would broaden its revenue stream if it purchases the 4G licenses being offered by the Egyptian communications ministry.

China Telecom recently announced that it is imposing a new rule on its network, which requires all users to register their phone numbers using their real names.

Phone numbers that are not properly registered will be cut off from the network and will no longer be able to make or receive phone calls starting this October.

The company, which is one of the country's three major telecommunications service providers, made the announcement through its executive, Li Anmin, on Tuesday. Li said the new rule will apply to both of the country's telecom landlines and mobile phones.

The Chinese government, which started implementing the new policy in May, has previously pointed out that it is the "strictest ever real-name registration for mobile users."

As explained, the registration of real names for the numbers enrolled in any of China's telecommunications service providers is aimed at cracking down fraudsters who use landlines and mobile phones to do their illegal trade.

Meanwhile, despite China's upgraded effort to track down telecom fraudsters, scammers are still able to find loopholes and cracks within the telecom network.

In August, two college students died from heart attacks after learning that their tuition funds were completely wiped out by telecom fraudsters.

One of the phone numbers used by the scammers was from China Telecom. Local media outlets reported that China Telecom is the most common network choice of many telecom fraudsters, according to All China Tech.

China has targeted to complete the registration of real names with telecom providers by July 2017.
