Colin Kaepernick's protest of not standing up during the national anthem has been a polarizing act not only in the sports community but on the political field as well.

With all the media attention thrown towards Kaepernick's act, David West of the Golden State Warriors has the same, yet, subtle act of defiance, which he has been performing for several years already.

West's protest may not be as noticeable as that of Kaepernick's, but the former's act has a subtle effect on whoever is keen enough to see it. During the singing of the national anthem, instead of lining up, West stood last in line while being about two feet behind his teammates.

West told ESPN that his silent protest which, despite its subtlety, tackles issues "a lot deeper" than the police brutality towards African-Americans which Kaepernick is protesting against.

West told ESPN website Undefeated, "What about education? What about infant mortality? How about how we die younger and our babies die sooner?"

"We die. (Black me) have the shortest life expectancy," he continued. "C'mon, man. The health care system?"

According to San Francisco Chronicle, West's protest was not noticed until recently when Kaepernick's act was blown up on the mainstream media. West said his protest has been going on for a long time that he could not pinpoint exactly when and where it actually started.

West's political stance is backed up by his expertise on African-American history. He is also an avid reader of The Wall Street Journal and The Economist. He also holds an advisory role for Zoetic Global, a hydrokinetic-energy company. West's charity, the West Group, has been providing scholarships for impoverished students in his native North Carolina.
