The Detroit Pistons are set to explore the point guard market before the new season begins as the team's starting playmaker Reggie Jackson will be out for six to eight weeks to treat tendinitis on his left knee.

CBS Local Detroit reported that the Pistons are "preparing for the possibility" that the 26-year-old former Boston College standout will miss the first couple of months of the upcoming regular season and are "set to explore contingency plans at the point guard position."

The free-agency market for point guard is thin at the moment, but former Miami Heat role players Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole have been tagged as potential signees for Detroit.

However, with Cole reportedly already signed to a $5 million deal in China, Chalmers, who is returning from an Achilles' tendon injury, remains the only viable option for the Pistons right now.

Chalmers averaged a career-high 10.8 points playing in 55 games for the Memphis Grizzlies last season. He also produced 3.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals in 22.8 minutes per game during the said period.

The two-time NBA champion was ruled out for the rest of the 2015-2016 season in March after tearing his Achilles' tendon and was eventually waived by the Grizzlies.

Veteran floor general Kirk Hinrich is also still a free agent at this time after he was released by the Atlanta Hawks in the summer.

SB Nation indicated that Jackson could miss six to eight weeks because of his knee problems that he admitted "has bothered him for years."

"That's something I've dealt with since I got into the league," Jackson said with regards to his chronic knee pain. "If people backtrack, I got an operation in 2011. But it's just taking care of it, maintaining it."

Speculations abound that the pain was aggravated by Jackson's "heavy workload" as a first-time starter last season, where he averaged 30.7 minutes per game, including 18.8 points, 3.2 boards, and 6.2 assists a night.
