Cyanogen Inc. Unveils New Modular OS Program, Organizational Reshuffle

(Photo : YouTube Screenshot) Start-up Cyanogen announced on Saturday that it will end its services by the end of the year.

Cyanogen Inc., the company behind Android-based open-source mobile operating system CyanogenMod, recently announced it will undergo a major reorganization, while gearing up to release the new Modular OS program of CyanogenMod.

The company even confirmed that its chief executive officer, Kirt McMaster, will be stepping down and will take the role of executive chairperson. Taking the vacated CEO role is Lior Tal, the company's chief operations officer since June.

Aside from the organizational reshuffle, Cyanogen Inc. also confirmed that it is rolling out a major update for the CyanogenMod operating system.

Dubbed only as the Cyanogen Modular OS, the update is said to be a set of "dynamic modules and MODs" which third-party hardware manufacturers can integrate into their own ROMs, according to Android Police.

The company did not confirm, though, the modules included in this new program. Speculations have claimed, however, that the existing C-Apps will be one of the first modules to be added. The program will allow partners to fully access the company's Artificial Intelligence cloud services.

Amid this development, Cyanogen Inc. made no mention yet about its plan to the current CyanogenOS and CyanogenMod programs. CyanogenMod is still the most popular custom ROM in the Android community and many will be disappointed should Cyanogen decide to shut down the project to focus on the new Modular OS program.

Cyanogen Inc. confirmed it will be moving away from "full stack" development. Whatever this move would bring, that is what consumers need to find out in the coming days.
