Mayweather Remains Undefeated; Will He Face Pacquiao Next?

Their second fight ended up like the first time around.

Floyd Mayweather defeated Marcos Maidana by unanimous decision at the MGM Grand Sep. 13.

Mayweather remains the undefeated champion with a 47-0 record.

Maidana may have lost the first fight against Floyd Mayweather, but many felt his performance was one of the closest to defeating the undefeated champion - leading to Maidana's increased odds and Mayweather agreeing to a very rare second fight opportunity.

Maidana's gameplan heading into the second fight was to sustain the aggressiveness shown in stretches of the first fight, but throughout the whole 12 rounds, putting emphasis on stamina during his training shown on Showtime's All Access.

However, Mayweather's efficient punching and effective counters overwhelmed Maidana basically throughout tonight's whole fight. Two judges scored the bout 116-111, and the third judge scored the bout 115-112 in favor of Mayweather in the unanimous decision.

Many thought Maidana would come out firing to start, but during the first two rounds both fighters were just feeling each other out, with no one quick to throw flurries of combinations.

The third round Mayweather began countering punches very effectively and taking control of the fight. Maidana did catch Mayweather with a huge right hook right before the buzzer causing him to stumble slightly though.

The huge right seemed to boost Maidana's confidence a bit as he came out very aggressive in the 4th round keeping Mayweather on the ropes. He was using his Jab to Mayweather's body to set up the right hook.

However, Mayweather did exactly as he should in the situation and was great at attacking while escaping off the ropes. At times Maidana was able to go to work for a combination with him trapped on the ropes, but Mayweather would simply clinch most of the times Maidana closed in when he couldn't escape.

Towards the end of the 8th round is when things got really bizarre. Mayweather started complaining about Maidana supposedly biting his fingers. Mayweather was arguing with the ref for nearly a couple minutes, but the ref didn't see anything.

After a slow-mo replay, it shows Mayweather palming his glove over Maidana's face in an effort to effect his breathing while the two were clinching. Maidana could have potentially bit him, but it was still very difficult to see even with multiple camera views.

Maidana got a point deducted in the 10th round for "pushing" Mayweather down to the canvas, although undeservingly as they were clinching again with Maidana angrily trying to push him away.

Mayweather knew the fight was his barring a miracle from Maidana. He mostly danced around the ring avoiding any flurry of punches Maidana threw during the whole 12th round to seal the win and remain undefeated.

Mayweather landed 51% of his punches dominating the efficiency game as Maidana only landed a mere 22% during the whole fight.

There are now only two fights left on Mayweather's contract before he reportedly will retire in 2015. Amir Khan wants a shot, but many are still anticipating the long awaited Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

"Pacquiao needs to focus on the person in front of him first. Once he gets past him, then we can see what happens," Mayweather said tonight in the post-fight interview.

Pacquiao is set to fight Chris Algieri Nov. 22, but has already stated he's ready to fight Mayweather. Pacquiao's camp, as well as both HBO and Showtime networks, want the fight to happen. The rest seems to all lie on whether Mayweather wants to agree to terms or not.
