Network provider BT has announced that it has struck a partnership deal with Sidewalk Labs' Intersection to launch LinkUK, a project that aims to deliver free internet and phone services in London and the rest of the United Kingdom.

LinkUK is based on LinkNYC which is based in New York. The service was launched by the Google-backed startup Intersection.

Just like its counterpart in New York, LinkUK will establish kiosks that offer free Wi-Fi connection providing speeds of up to 1Gigabit per second. Aside from free Wi-Fi connection, these kiosks will also provide free voice calls to connected users.

One of the downsides of LinkNYC is that these hubs have become a point where some users loiter to browse porn. Taking a tip from this experience, LinkUK will provide free Wi-Fi services but will restrict its services to approved websites only.

In a statement, Intersection and Sidewalk Labs chairman Dan Doctoroff said, "LinkUK from BT will bring tremendous benefits to Londoners, visitors, local businesses, and international brands and we look forward to working with our partners, BT and Primesight, to transform this great city's streetscape."

Google has been aggressively pushing its high-speed broadband services in the UK. However, despite the promised breakneck speed that Google offers, LinkUK said that BT would provide the needed network and connectivity for the service.

As part of the deal, Primesight will handle the advertising arrangement. Primesight will provide digital ads in kiosks, as well as certain forms of non-digital vinyl display ads.
