At least 9 construction workers were confirmed dead on Tuesday after a mine collapsed during maintenance procedures at the Danshuigou colliery in China's Shanxi province.

Ten people have reportedly been trapped in the mine when it collapsed on Tuesday morning at 10:45 a.m. (local time). Rescue workers were able to save one person but the rest lost their lives due to the incident.

The only survivor was reported to be coping well and was not in a critical condition.

ECNS reported that the cause of the coal mine accident is still under investigation. Officials at the Shuozhou City were also not available for comment in regard to the incident.

China is recognized globally as a lead coal distributor. However, its mining sector has constantly been placed under thorough scrutiny for poor regulations.

Thus far, China has constantly made news for building and mine collapses, killing mostly construction workers who are on site, and occasionally, even rescue operators are not spared.

On Friday last week, a total of 12 people were confirmed dead following a Wednesday gas explosion in Henan province in China.

The Wednesday morning incident occurred at the Dengfeng City colliery during an expansion process. Of the 12 recorded to have died, three were rescuers.

The accident was reportedly caused by human error; the death of seven victims was, however, recorded to be due to lack of oxygen.

Yahoo News reported that a total of 931 fatalities were recorded back in 2014, according to statistics presented by China's Work Safety Administration.

The Chinese government has vowed to shut down over 1,000 mines that were outdated and underperforming in a bid to reduce on fatalities due to mining-related incidents.
