Secret Service Tightens Security After White House Security Breach

U.S. Secret Service Tightens Security Of White House After Security Breach

The United States has tightened its security after a man jumped over the fence and made it through the White House front door

The United States Secret Service has started weighing in on a series of measures to enhance security around the White House complex after a man scaled the fence and was able to gain entry through the front door, putting the life of the President and the First Family in danger Friday night.

The incident happened less than 10 minutes after the First Family boarded a Marine One helicopter in route to Camp David, the presidential retreat.

The unprecedented security breach at the White House has prompted the Secret Service to enhance security measures such as moving tourists and D.C. residents farther away from the complex to prevent intruders from scaling the wall and endangering the life of the President.

One proposal is to keep pedestrians off the sidewalks circling the White House and to build several yards of additional barriers around the perimeter of the complex. Another is to screen visitors a block away from the entrance gate.

These ideas and proposals come on the heels of a security breach in which a man, reportedly carrying a gun and a knife, jumped over the fence and sprinted to the White House with the Secret Service running after him.

The breach has put the Secret Service under heavy scrutiny, with people doubting if they have the real capability of securing the President and the White House.

The jumper was identified as Omar Gonzalez, 42, of Texas. His family said he was a veteran in the Iraq war. He was charged with trespassing and carrying a deadly weapon at the D.C. Superior Court.

Observers believe that ideas and plans of the Secret Service to tighten security in and around the White House are theoretical as all will have to be approved by multiple government agencies and the Obama Administration. The National Park Services is in charge of the property surrounding the mansion.

Friday's incident has alarmed all levels of the Secret Service. Julia Pierson, Director of the Service, advised the Obama staff that she has conducted an investigation into how the man was able to enter the White House through the front door without being stopped. She had also taken steps to tighten security at the complex, assigning more agents and adjusting shifts.

Reports state that the Secret Service has struggled in past years to maintain security around the White House without making the iconic building seem like a 'fortress' as current and past administrations have always encouraged the view of the White House as the 'people's house.'
