Chinese government's plan to move Teachers' Day from current date of September 10 to Confucius birthday on September 28 has stirred debate in the country over the proposed move.

China' s cabinet, the State Council has planned the change in date of celebrating Teachers' Day in its draft amendment on a package of education laws in the country and it plans to canvas public opinion on the proposed laws.

Though people in Qufu City of China's Shandong Province has expressed pleasure over the Chinese government's move as most of the people in city are considered to be the descendants of Confucius as he was thought to have born there around 2,654 years ago.

The netizens of Qufu city believe that the government's move will reflect the return of Chinese traditional culture as Confucius is considered as China's earliest educationists and best Chinese teacher in ancient China.

On the other hand, many Chinese educationists are skeptical of possible effects of this move and believe that the government's move is just formalism.

Educationists says that instead of changing the date of Teachers' Day, Chinese government should focus more on the issues relating to teachers and work towards the improvement of well being of teachers in the country.

They believe that Chinese government should work towards diminish disparities in the pay scale of teachers in rural and urban areas of the country as new teachers in township get only 1,500 Yuan (243 US dollars) as compared to 10,000 Yuan (1,621 US dollars), a teacher gets in schools of major cities.

Considered as model teacher for generations, Confucius is believed to have born on September 28 in Qufu City in Shandong province and he given the philosophy of correctness of social relationship, justice sincerity, personal and governmental morality.
