New Avatar Sequels May Use 4K HD ‘120 Frames Per Second’ Technology

James Cameron, director and producer of Avatar, the highest grossing movie to date, might use a new 4K high definition system dubbed "MAGI" for Avatar's upcoming sequels.

Film director and inventor Douglas Trumbull invented the new 4K 3D system and technique that captures and displays images at 120 frames per second.

Cameron stated his intentions in 2011 to film the Avatar sequels at a higher frame rate instead of the usual industry standard.

Trumbull confirmed Cameron's interest in new cutting-edge technologies, but is unsure if Cameron will use his system.

Trumbull said "I know that Cameron admired Showscan and that he is a huge advocate of high frame rates. The use of HFRs for 'Avatar' would be very appropriate and very successful."

"I don't know if Cameron is interested. He's in seclusion writing the screenplay for Avatar. I am talking to Jon Landau, and we plan to have a screening soon (UFOTOG)."

UFOTOG is a short film that showcases Trumbull's new system process. Higher frame rates are now a huge attraction and tipping point for filmmakers and producers in the movie industry.

Trumbull further explained the potential use of the new system: "It delivers extreme fluidity of motion and amazing clarity with no strobing, no double flickering and a viewing experience that far exceeds conventional movie quality,"
