Chinese Scientists Plan to Design World’s Largest Particle-Collider

CERN's Large Hadron Collider

A group of Chinese scientists plans to design a gigantic particle collider called the Circular Electron Positron Collider or CEPC.

The new collider will be built in an 80 kilometer long tunnel and hopes to surpass CERN's current Large Hadron Collider located near Geneva, Switzerland.

China's physicists plan to cooperate with Western and international counterparts in the conceptual design of the collider.

"This machine is by and for the world," said Professor Gao Jie from the Institute of High Energy Physics in Beijing.

The collider hopes to represent the country's rise as a global power in scientific research at the front line of experimental particle physics.

"China will without question become the world leader in the field." said Arkani Hamed, professor at Princeton's Institute of Advanced Study.

The complex collider smashes electrons and anti-electrons together. This process is said to recreate hyper energy conditions.

The research aims to investigate and understand the origins of energy, matter, space and time. With plans for a massive collider, it might allow scientists to discover new particles.

Aside from CEPC, another collider called the Super Proton Proton Collider or SPPC will also be built in the same tunnel. This collider will be used by scientists to study the collisions of protons.

The research encourages global participation from leading scientists and physicists to lecture at the Center for Future High Energy Physics in Beijing.
