Sotheby’s Hong Kong to Auction Qi Baishi’s & Zhang Daqian’s Works

2013 Sotheby's Fine Chinese Paintings Auction will be held on October 7th in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. More than 350 works by leading modern Chinese artist such as Qi Baishi and Zhang Daqian will be sold during the auction, which are expected to bring about over HK$ 100 million.

During the media preview on September 16th, 2013, Deputy Director of Sotheby's Department of Classical Chinese Paintings Zhang Chaoqun indicated there would be several carefully assembled collections, including "Early 20th Century Art Scene in Beijing & Tianjin", which would offer audience a glimpse of the early 20th century of the Northern art circle and how artists from Beijing and Tianjin influenced each other during that period.According to the introduction, the major lots in the collection of "Early 20th Century Art Scene in Beijing & Tianjin" include Qi Baishi's Eight Crabs, which is expected to fetch between HK$ 1.5 million and HK$ 2 million, Chen Hengke's Crabs painted in 1920, which is expected fetch between HK$ 400,000 to HK$ 600,000 and Jin Cheng's Spring Scenery of Jiangnan painted in 1921, which is expected to fetch between HK$ 1.5 million and HK$ 2 million.

Other well-known lots include Zhang Daqian's Lady Seated by the Bamboo, which is expected to fetch between HK$ 2.5 million and HK$ 3.5 million, and Huang Binhong's Recluse in a Secluded Valley, which is expected to fetch between HK$ 2 million and HK$ 3 million.

The auction features several other carefully assembles collections, such as "A North American Collection of Important Chinese Paintings" and "Calligraphy from the Late Qing Dynasty". In addition, to celebrate its first 40 years in Asia, Sotheby's will hold an exhibition of Wu Guanzhong's works, presenting 40 rolls of ink paintings created between late 1970s and middle 1990s. 

Sotheby's was established in 1744 in London. It is one of the major auction industry multinational giants, with services in 40 countries. It is learned Sotheby's Hong Kong's turnover has kept growing during recent years.
