In a study released by advocacy group GLAAD, cable TV and the internet have specifically seen an upward trend with regards to the depiction of gay, lesbian and bisexual characters on television.

Networks have been actively promoting shows that feature the gay lifestyle and, many transgender and homosexual characters have been playing major roles on hit online series, such as Netflix's "Orange is the New Black" and Amazon's "Transparent".

In this year's Emmy Awards, transgender actress Laverne Cox was nominated for her role in "Orange is the New Black", becoming the first openly transgender actress to get a nod from the award-giving body.

According to Cox, who is also an activist for transgender rights, "There's not a lot of trans women on TV acting and not a lot trans women of color. I know I'm going to disappoint people, that people are going to want more from me, and I have to do the best that I can."

The study done by GLAAD also revealed that during the 2014-2015 season, 3.9 percent or 32 of the 813 characters regularly seen on prime-time scripted television series were lesbian, gay or bisexual.

The figure is an increase from the 3.3 percent in 2013, but a decrease from the record-high 4.4 LGBT representations on television in 2012.

Fox has emerged as the network with the highest percentage of regular characters who are lesbian, gay or bisexual.

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Glee" are the two shows contributing most to the tally.

On the other hand, ABC, which had tied with Fox for first in 2013, dropped to 4.5 percent from 5.4.

NBC is at 3.8 percent, while CBS is at 3.2. Both networks have seen an upward trend when it comes to representing lesbians, gays and bisexuals on their series.

The CW, on the other hand, has no regular LGBT characters

On cable, HBO has the most number of LGBT characters, followed by ABC Family and Showtime. In total, cable TV has 64 regular LGBT characters, an increase from the 42 characters seen last season.
