Drone Video Shows Apple's "Spaceship" HQ Construction Site

Apple Campus 2 HQ

Apple is building a new starship-like headquarters in Cupertino with a sky high price tag: US$5 billion.

Originally pitched by Steve Jobs back in 2006 and again in 2011, the new HQ looks to be the new home for Apple's elite. The project's coming along just fine, with a new aerial drone video showing the progress.

Campus 2, as Apple is calling it, will have room for 14,000 employees and tons of open space. Apple is investing a lot in underground work, underground parking space, labs, offices and even a 1,000-seat auditorium.

Nicknamed the spaceship or the "donut." the new HQ has an odd shape for a building. A large part in the center has been cut out for greenery. It was said Jobs regularly walked the grounds of the previous Apple HQ, instead of sitting indoors. This might be why Apple is looking to make it 80 percent greenery.

Glass and metal look to be the two main components in the new HQ. In many ways, the new building reflects Apple's retail stores, with large glass panes and white walls. The HQ will have solar panels fitted on the roof to power the facility.

Campus 2 will feature a 3,000 seat cafe, a fitness center, 300,000 square feet for research and development and its own power plant using natural gas and solar energy. It's one of the biggest company headquarters on the planet.

Apple spent US$160 million acquiring rights to the land, and spent another US$300 million for HP's abandoned land. Campus 2's cost was originally placed at US$500 million, but in 2013 Apple announced the budget had risen to US$5 billion.

Development of the campus should be finished in 2015. It could be 2016 or 2017 before Apple employees can actually work in the spaceship HQ.
